On 27th July the Orthodox Church celebrates the holiday of Saint Martyr Panteleimon. Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia in a wealthy and rich family. From his mother Evuly he got good Christian education. A priest Ermolai initiated him into the mysteries of the faith. Ermolai baptised the boy with the Panteleimon, it translates as "absolutely gracious." However, his father, Senator Evstorgios remained a pagan. Famous doctor Efrosin solved the situation with the education of Panteleimon. Medical knowledge of the Saint impressed the great Emperor Maximilian a lot; he wanted to bring him to the palace as a personal doctor.

Throughout the empire spread the news of the miracles performed by young doctor Panteleimon, who did not demand money for his services. Panteleimon was tortured and beheaded because he refused to worship idols.

On this day, farmers should stop any agricultural work. This Saint cures from all disease diseases and prevents fever. The lame and the blind should honour of St. Panteleimon on that very day, in order he release their sufferings.

During the holiday people are eating pumpkin meals and corn in order to be energetic during the winter time.

In the fold calendar this Saint is called Panteley - traveller. In the olden days this day was celebrated by people who were travelling a lot.

By implication this holiday is close to the tradition of St. Elias Day. It is celebrated because of the fear of fire, hail and thunderstorms.

It is considered that the holy day of Panteley separates summer from autumn. There is a saying: "summer is over as bread, winter comes like a dog."

Panteley asks that summer did not go away and return again rich and prosperous next year. Panteley protects humans and animals from diseases.

At St. Panteleimon holiday people commemorate the souls of the dead, give for this tradition pear, apples and bread.
