Holidays in Moldova

The holiday of St. George in the national calendar distinguishes the beginning of spring and it is celebrated on the 6th May.

Victory Day – is a celebration of the victory of the army and people of the Soviets over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War, which lasted from 1941 to 1945. It is celebrated annually on the 9th May.

This particular holiday celebrated on the 9th May in the Orthodox calendar is called rather strangely “Moving relics of St. Nicholas from Myra to Bari” and in the national calendar, it is called Summer holiday of St. Nicholas.

In the national calendar of Moldova this holiday is called Constantine Starling as it was celebrated right on "bird's holidays", when ended certain agricultural works, such as sowing oats, maize, millet. It was believed that if you sow plants later on, then the starlings come and eat seeds.

The Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Spas) is one of the great holidays is the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On 4th June was founded the National Bank of Moldova, in the same year was approved the banking legislation, which become the basis of the national banking system.

Rusaliy (The Holy Trinity), the Day of the Holy Spirit Rusaliy – is a celebration of roses that are put on the graves. Popular tradition says that Rusaliy were evil enchantress that were portrayed in various ways like playful, angry, funny, and beautiful young women. They are represented as unreal creatures in religious- mythical belief. Some sources indicate that they are daughters of the pagan Emperor Rusalima. He was against the Christians, because many of his national homagers turned from pagan faith to the Christian one. Hence the name of the holiday originated from this name of Rusaliy (Rusalim - Rusaliy).

Rusaliy holiday devoted to vegetation, land, nature, life-giving aspects. For Christians, the Great Sunday or Trinity means Descent of the Holy Spirit, this event occurs on the fiftieth day when the Easter is over.

June 10 Moldovan Frontier Troops celebrate their professional holiday

Historian Day, a professional holiday, is celebrated in Moldova since 2011. The initiative of this holiday was Association of the historians and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Government released the decree on June 8, in 2011.
