Saint Martyr Tryphon

The 1st of February is considered as the first important calendar holiday date for  agriculture, viticulture, horticulture, the day when winter changes to summer. People say that if on the day of Tryphon is no snow, then it will snow, and if there is, it will thaw. If on this day is snowfall, the year will give a rich harvest. And if on this day is thawing off the roofs, then expect a lot of rain during the year.

There are many different sayings expressing the leaving of winter and the coming of spring: "If there are many stars shining on Tryphon day – then welcome spring", "What kind of the Tryphon day will be, so are the remaining days of February."

The start for this holiday set up the Thracians with their ancient worship for God of the nature and the harvest - Sabazius, which was identified with the god of wine and grapes - Dionysus.

People call this holiday like this: Tryph, Tryphon Winter Changer, Saint Martyr Tryphon, Tryph – the patron of worms and caterpillars, the driver off of Mice. Say that Tryphon protects gardens, sown areas, crops, fields, and is the saviour from beetles that represent damage for plants.

Starting with the 1st of February, according to current ethno- folk traditions, winter loses its power and the spring gradually comes into its own one. If on this day there is snowfall then the year will be rich with the harvest. People do not do any of housework, otherwise the insects can do harm. Also it is forbidden to cut with the scissors, in order to avoid that bugs cut the plants` roots. On this day, farmers do not work in the vineyards. On St. Tryphon Day is only allowed to sprinkle the grapes with the holy water, wine, as it protects them it is said from any diseases.

In the Christian era the 1st February - the day of St. Tryphon had nothing to do with his mythical namesake. Tryphon saved Mary and Jesus from the Hebrew. After this event he turned his heart and soul into Christianity.

What little is known of Tryphon is that he was born in Bithynia, in the year of 250 after Christ. For the love and devotion towards the Christian faith he was tortured and beheaded.

According to another legend, the young Tryphon offended the Mother of God, being drunk, he wanted to enter the church torwards her. Virgin let him to enter that is why the day of Tryphon is celebrated with one day earlier that the Presentation of the Lord Day.

Some pagan traditions entered into the Christian faith, there were added with the church legends. On this day the peasants consecrated seeds, trees, plants.

St. Tryphon makes many miracles, rescues people from many troubles. It also saves people from disease and death.
