Assumption of Our Most Holy Mother of God

On the 15th of August all Orthodox Christians celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The name  they  call this holiday is the “Most Holy Mary”. Lent precedes the holiday. During the Lend Orthodox do not eat meat and vegetable oil. Due to the abundance of fruits and vegetable food during this time of year – it is really easier to follow the strict instructions of the Lent.

This holiday includes many aspects of the agrarian nature. On the Holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary women consecrate “boiled rice with raisins and honey " in the church, fruits, honeycomb and honey, grapes, and give to the poor "for the memory of the passed away ones," and visit the graves of their relatives.

In many villages of the Republic of Moldova on this day celebrate the Christian holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin that is her death. The Churches named in her honour, celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Temple of the village. All villagers together prepare for this holiday village; women do spring- cleaning, cook the most delicious meals. After lunch, everyone is going to “Hora of the village" – thus is means singing and dancing of the village.

Women – the bearers of the name Maria – are having name – day party.

Men on this day replace hats on caps.

This holiday opens the season of weddings, which lasts until the beginning of the Advent.
