Historian Day in Moldova

Historian Day, a professional holiday, is celebrated in Moldova since 2011. The initiative of this holiday was Association of the historians and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Government released the decree on June 8, in 2011. Historian Day is celebrated annually on 18th  July. This date is an important day for the community of historians of RM. Association of Historians in Moldova was established on June 18, in 1989, it worked for more than 20 years and played an important role in coordinating the work of historians.

Moldovan lands were inhabited even in antiquity, archaeologists found confirmation of life in these parts in the Palaeolithic era. True renaissance of Moldova started during the reign of Vasile Lupu, Petru Rares, Stefan cel Mare, Alexandru cel Bun, they left behind a rich cultural heritage. In 1359, in the written historical sources was mentioned for the first time about the state of Moldova. In 1365 Bogdan the Governor, ruler of the country, did his best so that to get the recognition of Moldova independence with its capital in Siret town.

There are a lot of monuments about all Moldova: the monasteries of Moldova, dated of the 13 -14 centuries are among the most ancient architectural monuments; the oldest monasteries are Curki, Hirbovat, Rudi, Căpriana; the important objects in the defence system of our country were the ancient fortresses like Tigina, Soroka, Hotin, the White Castle.

In Moldova is found one of the largest caves in the world, it is called Cave of Emil Rakovets, it is located in gypsum deposits near the village Curve in Edinet municipality.

In the cave there are several levels of total length of 89 km. It is needed also to mention the museum complex of Old Orhei, it reveals the evidence of Dacian civilization, the church and the Temple of St. Mary which were built in the first century, the remains of a fortress built by the Golden Horde in the 14th century - Shehr al Jadid, rock monasteries. Old Orhei – is the candidate for the membership into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
