
In 1886, on 1st May , workers in America call a strike demanding to establish an eight-hour working day. Strikes and demonstrations ended with violent collisions with police. In July 1889, in memory of the Chicago workers demonstrations the II International Congress in Paris decided to perform demonstrations every year on 1st May. In 1890, the International Workers' Day was celebrated for the first time in Sweden, France, Norway, the USA, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Austria-Hungary, and other countries. The 1st May Day has long been considered as a symbol of the revolution, the uncompromising class struggle. Today, this holiday of the 1st of May is celebrated in 142 countries. The Labour Day is not celebrated in more than 80 countries.
In Moldova, the 1st of May holiday is respected as a tradition and as a tribute to the older generation, which celebrates it even from the Soviet epoch times. Though, this holiday is not distinguished in any special way. There is not that solemnity that was during the Soviet period. However, many people, as before celebrate this holiday with great pleasure.
