On the 30th January all Orthodox believers are celebrating the Synaxis of the Three Hierarchs: St. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom , they are considered the most famous teachers of Christianity.
Three Saints – are three bishops. Their strong love for God helped them to win the heretics who tried to deflect the Church from the correct road. These Saints lived in IV-V centuries, in those days were many collisions of Christian and pagan traditions. Each of the Saints did a great contribution to Christian theology. People called them Ecumenical teachers and bishops. They are celebrated on the same day in order to stop disagreements among Christians, also these saints are celebrated individually too. The Ruler of Moldova- Vasile Lupu in their honour founded the Church named after these Three Hierarchs – it is situated in Orhei.

The people said that to these three hierarchs – to John, Gregory, and Basil is dedicated this holiday of Three Saints.
According to legends, the Three Hierarchs were doctors and they cured people. Also it is said that in their honour in the centre of the constellation Orion – there are three the Magi, or Three Kings.
Probably a pagan women’s holiday proceeded to this Christian holiday. So beliefs say that these Three Hierarchs are three girls that at the time when God walked around the earth they gave him a drink. Therefore, in a drought time people are addressing to them that they propitiate God to give rain.
On this day people do not work, it is given for a candle for the memory of those passed ones. The Holy Mother of God on the day wanted to go with Jesus Christ into the church, but had forgotten that did not passed 40 days from his birth. Returning home, she created cover for the church until the 2nd February. Holiday of the Three Saints liberates people from all sins. On this day people cook boiled rice with raisins and honey and get it to church. In many villages, the Three Saints are protectors of the family hearth. Girls guess happiness, eating only bread and salt. The weather changes on that day. If on this day is frost, the summer will be hot, and if it thawing from the roof, then spring will be cold.
