
This is one of the oldest and most important Orthodox holidays honouring the Holy Cross.
This day narrates about the important events of the life of Saints Constantine and Helen. So, according to scripture before the battle Constantine had a vision - in broad daylight, the cross appeared in the sky of formed stars, with the inscription "With this sign you will conquer". After the victory of Constantine asked his mother, Helen, to find the cross on which Christ the Savior was crucified. Empress Helena found this cross in Jerusalem, close to Golgotha, Mount Calvary. Patriarch Macarius lifted this cross over the ambon in the church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.
Since then, every year, on 27th September is celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
In accordance with the traditions of the church on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, after the vespers from altar on the middle of the church is put the cross decorated with flowers.
Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is respected with fasting. On this day, do not eat garlic, walnuts, plums and melons. Fasting for family health, growth and wellbeing of all members as well as domestic animals. Devoted believers firstly consecrated in the church, and then distribute to the poor for the memory of the passed away ones milk and honey; each bowl is covered with Kalaches.
On this day are arranged funeral repast for the souls of the dead. It is strictly forbidden to work.
