Dragobete

Dragobete – is an ancient traditional holiday that used to be celebrated, today it is however mistakenly known as the feast of St. Valentine.

24th February all Orthodox people are celebrating the First and the Second Finding of honoured head of the Forerunner Baptist John. Over time, the old Slavic word "Drago" and "biti" was modified and adapted to our language - Bragovete, Bragobete, Rogobete, Vobreteniya and this is very close a sound to that of the word Dragobete.

People depicted the image of Dragobete as the Romanian god Pantheon, which is celebrated on 24th February. It was and still is associated with Cupid – the god of love and romance or in Greek mythology is Eros.

There is a nice tradition of the holiday Dragobete - the ancient tradition was for everyone to become sisters and brothers, and thus “family” a nice and considered option or version of Thracian word origin.

Драгобете

If someone wanted to be with someone a brother or sister, they made themselves a little scratch in the form of a cross on his or her arm and then imposed a scratch on one another. So they became sisters and brothers; others just hugged and kissed brotherly and vowed to help each other. Sisters and brothers put food on the table with some delicious meals and treated their friends.

Folk legends say that Dragomir or Dragobete was the son of woman Dokia. He was a handsome young guy like Fat Frumos from Moldovan fairy - tales, which is the symbol of pure love. Dragobete inspired girls and women to have “faith in love.”

Tradition. Superstition. Customs.

There is possibly a better belief that the end of February, the birds that remained after the long cold winter, "get engaged", or mate. Those birds that are not paired in this period can not have chicks throughout the whole year.

People named this holiday – “Birds Engagement.”

Folk law thus considers it a bad sign, if on that day a guy or girl does not meet anyone of the opposite sex, they will not have any success in love affairs throughout the year. And if a guy with a girl went out for a walk, they necessarily had to kiss; otherwise they will not love each other throughout the year. People do not say in vain, that " Dragobete is kissing girls."

In this holiday is allowed to do some house work around the home. Women were allowed to do the cleaning. However, I believe that serious works Dragobete does not support, so that men and women did not work, because they feared the wrath of Dragobete and in order "not to their lives tweet like birds."

People say that on this day they should drink tea of young branches of cherry and eat cake with crushed hemp seeds "tresnitsey" or "zhufru " that the whole year to love and be loved.

It is a pity that many of the nice traditions are not kept in the present day.
