Martishor

Annualy on the 1st  of March is celebrated one of the most beloved national holidays - named Martishor in Moldovan language. In the first days of spring people give each other little boutonniere in the form of flowers, they must be in white and red colours. They are called Martisors. They are worn on outer clothing all month, and on the 31st March these nice small Martishors are hung out on the trees. Those who perform this nice tradition will be successful all the year round. According to a legend, on 1st March at the edge of the woods the beautiful Spring comes out. Looking around she saw a primrose making his way out of the snow among the blackthorn at a glade. She decided to help this little flower and started to clear the land around, freeing it from the thorny branches.

Winter saw this and became furious, she called the cold wind and snow with a wave of the hand and sent them to destroy the budding sprout. Under the tough wind a weak flower wilted. Spring wanted to cover the flower with her hands and pricked with thorns. Hot drop of blood fell from the wounded hands and it returned the ailing small flower to life. Thus the Spring won over the Winter. Since 1967 during these days the music festival with the same name "Martishor" is held in our country. Various famous, world known professional artists, amateur groups from different countries are invited to this international festival.
