Great storms with rains pour over the fields of those people who work on this day.
Previously, the holiday of St. Elijah was celebrated for 3 days, capturing the day of Ilya "Pălii" (21.07) and St. Phocas (22.07). One of the many legends about St. Elias day there is evidence that people do not work on this day. There is an opinion that when God created the world, the land he gave to the Devil in order he be obedient. And the Holy Elijah asked God to give him power over the devil. God gave him a chariot, four horses, thunder and lightning. At a time when the Holy Elijah pulled thunder and lightning on the devils, a strong earthquake happened. God punished Elijah for that and cut Elijah`s arm and leg, so he would not destroy the entire world. The Devils escaped from the terrible Elijah hiding in animals, in the hollows of trees, and the thresholds of houses. Saint Elijah struck by lightning all places where evil spirit could be hiding. People during heavy rains and thunderstorms made a sign of the cross, because they knew that God commanded Elijah to beat with the lightning everywhere except of the place where cross was.
People try not to work on the day of St. Elias, in order to avoid hails and ruined sown fields, houses and gardens.
Earlier, on the night of St. Elijah girls went to hemp field, undressed and laid down in cannabis. If they dreamed of green hemp, which meant that will marry a young man, and if they were dreamed of dry cannabis, this meant that they will marry with an elderly man.
Early morning on that day women picked herbs. Elijah is the saint patron of beekeepers. On this day, people take out the honey from the hives and go to the church to sanctify it. Also of honey and water is prepared a drink which is called "mied".
Like other holidays, this day, people commemorate the dead. Children are given apples. Before that day of St. Elias pears and apples were not eaten until they are hallowed in the church. Today, this tradition is not respected.
