On the day of Makovey people pick up poppy and hallow it in the church, so that it would be well preserved over time. On this day, gardens and a couple of wheat spikelet that are going to be sown are sprinkled with the holy water.
Another name of this holiday – is the beginning of Makovey Lent "Macovei cap de post" that means “Macovey is the head of the Lent”. On the day of Makovey people gather honey from the hives.
Another unusual name of the holiday is - Makovey is the soul of the bear. This day is celebrated because people were afraid that the bear eat their domestic animals. Due to the fact that a bears is considered the king of the animals; this holiday was celebrated to honour this majestic animal.
Previously reigned cult of bear, people believed that this animal has healing powers. His forces passed to people who were named Macovey. When the small babies are born they are smeared with bear grease or are given spoonful of bear fat in order to be healthy and unconquerable. Also bear fat with walnut ash are used for hair growth.
