Vladimir Voronin will be under the protection of the State Guard to the end of the year

By order of the current president of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, the former President Vladimir Voronin will use the services of state protection to the end of the year.

The request to the President was made by Voronin’s bodyguards. The Service of the State Guard explains this requirement is due to the difficult situation in the country.

The press secretary of the president Vlad Turcan said: "The ex-president Vladimir Voronin will be under state protection according to the order of the President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti. The Head of State has considered the request from the State Guard Service, which explains the need for security in relation to the particular situation in the region at the moment".

A former president has the right to use state protection usually for only four years after the end of the mandate; Vladimir Voronin’s mandate expired at the end of March.
